Ello 2018 | The Highs and Lows of 2017

Posted by Gem Turner

Right, I haven’t blogged in such a long time so let’s clear the small talk and get straight into it. The main reason why I haven’t blogged? The last bit of the year was a bit sketchy for me. The first reason is my health, nothing major just breaking ribs and the flu. Still flu is flu and when it gets you, boom. I’m still not quite over it yet either – rude. And sneezing with broken ribs is something I will never quite master. Aint that right fellow brittle friends?

The second reason is because of a situation that happened near the end of the year. It basically involved a group of builders taking pictures of me in my lunch hour. [I have to say my workplace took it very seriously and I’m so grateful for all they have done about it.] I deal with a lot of comments/stares and usually I see the funny side and tell you all on here about it after. But this was different. All I can describe it as is, at my place of work I feel at my best, it’s my safety net and these men made me feel like I was some kind of alien that had literally just dropped from the sky. Whispering, mocking and laughing. All because I was eating. The worst thing was I chose a hotdog to eat… of all the food choices! Have you ever tried to eat a hotdog knowing you’re being filmed, yeah – impossible. I did however have the adrenaline to challenge these men when they walked by me after and I’m so glad I had the energy to do so.

Anyway so this meant that for a while I’ve been a little less confident, looking around a lot more and generally feeling a bit self conscious – which is so annoying because if you know me personally, this is so not me.

BUT let’s not dwell on the negativity. Overall 2017 was bloody brill. My highlights have to be of course seeing the one and only CELINE DION and winning a national award for my blog. I know I’m sorry but I am proud about that one. I also tackled (a bit more) my fear of travelling and travelled on lots of trains woohoo. So the positives definitely outweigh the negatives in 2017.

So new year’s resolutions – I’m not very good at. I get overwhelmed with big goals. Does anyone else? So I’ve decided to give myself only 1 this year, and that is to start DRIVING. Oh yeah. I know I’m 24 and I still haven’t learned to drive. But this year is the year and I’m blogging it so I am accountable to anyone who reads this. With goals I get overwhelmed with how to get to the finish line, so I’m going to break the goal into stages.

– Do theory
– Enquire about car and adaptations / wait for them to be built
– Learn to drive
– Do test
BOOM Gem is on the road!!!
Hopefully it will be a simple as that… I’m sure I’ll take you on the journey anyway.

So that’s the plan, anyone else have adaptations for your car? I’d love to know what I should be looking for. I honestly can’t wait to get going! Let me know your thoughts on 2018 – do resolutions overwhelm you too?

Let’s all try and do one new thing this year, no matter how big or small it is!

I really enjoy reading your blog Gem! A brilliant read, full of observations and interesting opinion! Regards adaptations Gem, you would need to go to Leeds diving assessment centre and they’ll let you drive one of their adapted vehicles and work out exactly what works best for you and will write a full report of recommendations. So don’t worry about that too much. The report goes to the car adapters for them to modify the car accordingly. Go for it Gem ! There’s a whole life out there for you to get to by car!! Look forward to hearing all about it on here! X
