Managing your hair when you’re in a wheelchair

Gem smiling with red watermelon drink

My hair is something that I’m really precious about. When my hair feels good – I feel good. But when you have shorter arms and have lower energy sometimes, it’s not always easy to maintain.

Recently I cut my hair quite short (woah) which was a decision that I made to make it easier to wash and dry. However, if I’m honest, I think I’m going to grow it just past my shoulders as I don’t quite feel like myself when my hair is really short.

Anyway, I realised the other day, I have a few products that really help keeping my hair in place and healthy as possible – so I thought I’d share these today!

Table with pink tangle teaser on top

Tangle teasers are brilliant aren’t they? But I find the small ones are really difficult to reach all of my head. So I bought this one which has a longer handle – so much easier to manage, and no knots which is great when you get the old what I call “wheelchair hair” when you’ve been sat back too long.

Lee Stafford Here Come The Curls tube

Here come the Curls – I have loved the smell of Lee Stafford products since I was a teenager. I’ve tried a few curl creams to put on before I dry my hair and I find this one to be the most useful. It keeps my hair smelling lovely and allows my hair to be manipulated how I want to style it easier without it going static (I always get electric shocks in my wheelchair too – anyone else get them??).

Bb pret a powder

Bb Powder – This is a little on the pricey side but an absolute game changer. Dry shampoo, yes is genius but it’s soooo hard to actually bloody spray. I saw this at the Glamour Festival in Manchester and was wowed. All you have to do is sprinkle some on your head and it just freshens and lightens (blonde hair) so much. It’s such an accessible product for me – go Bb!

Bb glow

Bb Glow – I’ve got to say, I’m not really sure about the science of heat protector, but I tend to find some of these are really sticky so I tend to stay away from them. However, now my hair is short – I’m using my straighteners to curl my hair a lot more so want to keep it as healthy as possible. This heat protector is really thin but feels like it’s coated your hair when it’s on. I do struggle with the pump a little but I get someone to just blitz it all over my hair before I dry or straighten it.

Living Proof full dry volume blast spray

Dry Volume Blast – Now, this is the dark horse of sprays! You know when you want your hair to have that va va voom and sway in the non existing wind? This really does make your hair do that! It has really helped with my short hair as it gives it a bit of life at the end of styling it. This is the travel version as I wanted to try it first – I will definitely get it again!

So there you go, those are just a few ways I keep my short hair maintained while I’m sat in my chair these days. Anyone else got anything they would add?
